National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)

Director of Photography / Tutor / 2022

Over a period of three months I tutored a group of second year BA students (POB2), both in the classroom and on set, to further their understanding of the principles of photography and cinematography. We began by learning about aperture, shutter speed, ISO/gain, depth of field and the exposure triangle.

We then deepened our knowledge by exploring types of lighting, quality of light, colour temperature, the significance of colour, the colour wheel, colour theory and plutchiks wheel of emotions.

In the latter part of the course I worked with the students to take a scripted short film through the pre-production, production and post production stages.

The production, which was written, directed and performed by NIDA students, took place over seven days in studio and on location.

The set design, set building, props making and art department were all undertaken by the students. They also fulfilled all the crew roles including, producer, director, first AD, 1st AC, art department, wardrobe, gaffer, director of photography; and the pre and post production roles including, story board artist, editor, colourist and sound designer.
